shoot-at-sight orders in place for maneater leopard in pauri
Haridwar, April 25 -- The state forest department on Friday issued a shoot-at-sight order for a leopard suspected of killing a 72-year-old woman near a village in Pauri Garhwal district, officials said.
Seeta Devi, a resident of Bamti village, was killed on Thursday near her house after she went to cut grass, they added. Her body was found near bushes close to the village.
Villagers allegedly gheraoed forest personnel and demanded intervention by senior officials over repeated attacks by leopards.
Sub-divisional forest officer Ayesha Bisht said the department has received permission from higher authorities to eliminate the leopard as a last resort. "Ensuring the safety of villagers is our priority. Iron cages and trap cameras have been installed and expert shooters along with forest personnel have been deployed in the area," Bisht said.
Additionally, the education department has ordered the closure of around a dozen government schools and anganwadi centres in and around the village village until Monday.
Surendra Khanduri, husband of the deceased, said, "As usual, she had gone to cut grass in the morning. I was waiting for her so that we could have breakfast together. When she did not return, I informed villagers and we began searching for her."
"I have lost my wife and I do not want anyone else to face such a tragedy. The authorities should provide immediate relief from the leopard menace," he added....
