Sharma hits unbeaten 63, keeps UP in hunt for a knockout berth
LUCKNOW, Feb. 9 -- Hosts Uttar Pradesh on Sunday notched up a convincing five-wicket win over Chandigarh to keep their hopes alive for a knockout berth in the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy in Kanpur.
With the win, Uttar Pradesh stay on top of Group D with 52 points in six matches, and now they will have to wait for other teams' results in other ongoing matches for qualifying as only two teams from the pool will make the cut.
In a match where spinners dominated on all three days on a slow surface of the Green Park Stadium, Rituraj Sharma's unbeaten 63 in 95 balls with the help of seven boundaries and two sixes helped Uttar Pradesh reach home in 33.3 overs. Keeper-batter Kaartikaya Singh (12) too remained unbeaten as Uttar Pradesh needed 97 runs in their second innings to win.
In reply to Chandigarh's first innings total of 170, Uttar Pradesh managed 260 runs, securing an important 90-run lead. On Sunday, Chandigarh's second innings was wrapped up for 185, giving UP a target of 96 runs, which they achieved with five wickets to spare. Overall, a total of 35 wickets fell in the match, with 25 of them going to the spinners. The Green Park pitch proved to be a puzzle for the batters of both the sides as most of them looked struggling.
While resuming at the overnight score of 78/4 on Sunday, Chandigarh could score 185 in 60.5 overs. Jaskirat Singh Mehra scored run-a-ball 30 with the help of six boundaries.
For Uttar Pradesh, pacers Vijay Kumar finished with 4/44, whereas two spinners Shubham Mishra and Akshu Bajwa shared six wickets between them. Whereas Mishra took 4/56, Bajwa bagged 2/48.
Chasing a seemingly easy target of 96 runs, Uttar Pradesh had a shaky start, losing early wickets quickly. At one point, it seemed that even the small target might prove difficult, but Rituraj Sharma held one end and guided the team to victory.
Uttar Pradesh's poor run in the Senior Women's One Day Trophy continued even in their second league match of Elite Group A as on Sunday, they lost to Maharashtra by six wickets, at the Sanosara Cricket Ground B in Rajkot.
Even after putting up 276 in 49.1 overs while batting first after winning the toss, Uttar Pradesh bowlers failed to defend the total and Maharashtra romped home with 11 balls to spare. Tejaswini Batwal (83), AA Patil (53*), MR Magre (48), Gautam Naik (38) and SR Mane (22*) did the bulk of the scoring....
