LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Sept. 3 -- The Sharda river crossed the danger mark here at Palia Kalan on Wednesday after excess water was released from Uttarakhand's Banbasa barrage, while flood and erosion threats persisted in parts of Nighasan tehsil. At the Sharda bridge, the river was flowing at 154.95 metres against the danger mark of 154.59 metres, 35 cm above the threshold. At Sharda barrage, however, the water level was 135.10 metres, 39 cm below the danger mark of 135.49 metres. The rising river inundated agricultural land along its banks in Palia Kalan, but SDM Pushpak said floodwater had not entered villages. He said the level had remained constant since Wednesday and relief measures were ready. In Tikunia, the Mohana and Karnali rivers continued to pose flood and erosion threats. DM Anjani Kumar Singh inspected Jasnagar village, where the Mohana was eroding farmland and threatening the afflux bund. The DM said the Mohana's flow had increased, while irrigation officials were working round the clock to control erosion. About a dozen houses in the floodplain faced an erosion threat, he said, adding that residents could be evacuated if required. Heavy overnight rain also flooded roads, village corridors and fields across the district, forcing commuters to wade through knee-deep water.
