Lucknow, Sept. 28 -- The Department of Paediatric Surgical Superspecialities at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, has secured seven national honours for six of its faculty members and MCh residents at IAPSCON 2026 held in Bengaluru, highlighting the institute's contribution to paediatric surgical research, academic excellence and specialised clinical care. The honours include a National Leadership Award, the UC Chakraborty Gold Medal for Best Research Paper, four first prizes and two second prizes. The recognition was spread across both senior faculty and postgraduate researchers, with award-winning work covering complex paediatric surgical disorders. Professor Basant Kumar, professor and head of the department, received the National Leadership Award 2026 in paediatric surgery for his contribution to paediatric surgical care, teaching, academics and research. Professor Ankur Mandelia won two first prizes for research papers. Among the MCh residents, Dr (Lt Col) Rahul Goyal won the UC Chakraborty Gold Medal for Best Research Paper 2026. Dr Shuchi Varshney won a first prize for her study on the department's 14-year experience with extragonadal germ cell tumours in children. Dr Anand Kumar Maurya also secured a first prize for research on the varied presentation and surgical management of rectal and hindgut duplications in infants.
