Seven killed, 25 hurt as double-decker bus overturns in Unnao
LUCKNOW, May 27 -- At least seven people, including a Bihar police sub-inspector and a prisoner being escorted by a police team, were killed while 25 others were injured after a double-decker AC bus overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in UP's Unnao district, early on Tuesday morning, police said.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the accident and directed officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured while wishing them a speedy recovery. Traffic on the expressway remained disrupted for nearly half an hour following the accident before normal movement was restored.
The accident occurred between 5:15 am and 5:30 am near milestone 262 in the Auras police station area when the Delhi-to-Bihar bus carrying 36 passengers lost control and overturned.
Safipur circle officer (CO) Sonam Singh said five passengers died on the spot while two others succumbed during treatment.
"Twenty people have been referred to higher medical centres in Lucknow after primary treatment. Traffic movement on the expressway has been restored," the officer said.
According to a statement issued by King George's Medical University (KGMU), 25 injured passengers from the accident were brought to the Trauma Centre. "One patient was brought dead and sent to the mortuary. Two critically injured patients suffering from polytrauma have been admitted to the ICU, intubated and placed on ventilator support," the statement said.
Hospital authorities said the remaining 22 patients were under observation, with most suffering multiple fractures and orthopaedic injuries. The statement added that Dr Ashish Kumar, head of the department of Orthopaedics, was supervising treatment, investigations and further management of the injured patients.
According to the preliminary investigation, the driver is suspected to have dozed off while driving at high speed. Eyewitnesses said the speeding bus suddenly veered out of control, hit the divider and overturned near the roadside railing. Several passengers were flung out through shattered windows and fell onto the slope along the expressway. One passenger reportedly suffered a severed leg in the crash.
Among the deceased were Bihar Police sub-inspector Ramchandra Ram, 59, posted at Siwan Police Lines, and prisoner Chhatarpal Singh Tomar, 59, a resident of Gurugram. Police said the Siwan police team had travelled to Gurugram on May 24 to produce the prisoner before a court and was returning at the time of the accident.
The other deceased were identified as Suresh Kumar Jaiswal of Mundera Bazar in Gorakhpur, Videshi Gupta of Madpur in Gorakhpur and Vijay Kumar of Faresan Govindpur in Basti district. The identities of two victims are yet to be established.
Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched relief operations. Six to seven ambulances were deployed to shift the injured to the nearby community health centre.
Doctors at the CHC declared six passengers dead on arrival. Another injured passenger later died during treatment at Lucknow Trauma Centre.
Most passengers onboard were reportedly residents of Basti, Siddharthnagar and Gorakhpur districts. Brijesh Kumar, an injured passenger from Ballabhgarh in Haryana, said he was asleep when the accident took place.
"There was a sudden jolt followed by a loud explosion-like sound. Before I could understand anything, everything went dark. I regained consciousness in the hospital," he said.
Constable Ramji, who was part of the Bihar Police escort team, said the bus had left Delhi for Gorakhpur around 8.30 pm on Monday night. "Most passengers were asleep when the accident occurred. After the loud sound, we realised the bus had overturned. Later, we came to know that the sub-inspector and the prisoner travelling with us had died," he said....
