Services hit as junior doctors launch strike
Agra, Aug. 30 -- Doctors at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) in Aligarh suspended emergency services and went on strike on Friday to protest an alleged attack on a junior resident by some law students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Thursday night. AMU, meanwhile, has suspended a BA LLB student in connection with the incident.
On Thursday night, a few law students went to AMU's JNMC and pressed for early treatment of a batchmate. A verbal dispute between law students and junior doctors took place, following which junior resident Dr Tahir Hussain Farooqi was allegedly assaulted.
Dr Farooqi lodged his complaint on Thursday night and alleged that Mohd Mujtaba Ahmed and others physically assaulted him and intimidated him.
Proctor Prof Mohd Wasim Ali held the student prima facie guilty of indiscipline and misconduct, and placed him on suspension.
Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) gave the call for a strike, suspended emergency services and reduced the OPD timings. OPD ran only for a few hours on Friday, leaving several patients and their caretakers disappointed.
The doctors on strike held a general body meeting and condemned the attack. They sought immediate FIR, rustication and campus ban on people responsible, amid other things, said Dr Sami Ahmed Khan, the RDA president....
