Search enters day 5 for missing trekker
Dehradun, June 4 -- A massive multi-agency search operation has entered its fifth day as authorities continue efforts to trace a 24-year-old woman trekker from Ramnagar in Nainital district who went missing while camping on a meadow trek in Uttarkashi district.
Meanwhile, the woman's family has raised suspicions regarding the role of the two friends who accompanied her on the trek, police said.
The missing woman, identified as Babita Pandey, an MBA student and resident of Ramnagar, had travelled to Uttarkashi with two friends. According to officials, the trio was camping at Goi campsite on the Dayara Bugyal trek route when she went missing on May 29 midnight.
Uttarkashi district magistrate Prashant Arya said the woman's companions informed authorities about her disappearance on May 30 after initially searching for her themselves.
"They told us that Babita stepped out of the tent around midnight and did not return. When they woke up the next morning and could not locate her, they searched the area before reporting the matter to police on May 30. Eyewitnesses also stated that she was last seen near the tent. So far, no trace of her has been found and there are no signs of a struggle at the site," Arya said.
More than 150 personnel from the Army, ITBP, NDRF, SDRF, police, forest department, revenue department and disaster management teams have been deployed in the search operation.
"Sniffer dogs and drones have also been deployed in the search operation," he said.
"A six-member specialised search team has also been constituted to intensify the operation," Arya said. However, no clues regarding the woman's whereabouts have emerged so far. Meanwhile, based on a complaint lodged by the family, Uttarkashi police registered an FIR against Harman Pal and Harman Preet under Section 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) on May 31....
