Scorching heat, humidity trigger surge in eye infections & headaches
LUCKNOW, July 9 -- Scorching heat and high humidity levels are taking a toll on people's health, with a significant rise in cases of eye infections, headaches, migraines, stress and irritability.
Medical institutions in the city are reporting a sharp increase in patients. The psychiatry outpatient department (OPD) at Balrampur Hospital has seen a 20% surge in cases, while the ophthalmology OPD at Lok Bandhu Raj Narain Hospital (LBRNH) has recorded over a 50% rise.
Dr Vinay Verma, consultant ophthalmologist at LBRNH, stated that eye infection cases have notably increased over the past week. "Nearly 50 out of 100-120 patients visiting the OPD daily are reporting eye allergies caused by excessive heat. Conjunctivitis and other allergic eye conditions have become quite common," he said.
Meanwhile, Dr PK Srivastava, consultant psychiatrist at Balrampur Hospital, said that the extreme heat is aggravating issues like headaches, migraines, stress and anxiety. "We've seen more than a 20% increase in patients with mood disorders. Around 30 out of 150-170 daily OPD cases are now related to mood issues," he noted.
He added that frequent power outages at night are disrupting sleep patterns.
Dr Verma advised people to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, wear protective gear, and maintain hygiene to prevent eye infections....
