Sanchez brushes off report US may suspend Spain from Nato
madrid, April 25 -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he'll maintain cooperation with Nato allies and brushed off a report that US officials are considering suspending his country from the alliance for its stance on the Iran war.
Spain doesn't "work based on emails, but on official documents and positions issued by the US government," Sanchez told reporters as European leaders gathered for a summit in Cyprus on Friday.
The Pentagon is considering options to punish Nato allies over perceived failed support for US operations in Iran, Reuters reports earlier, citing an internal email and a US official. Options include suspending Spain from the alliance, it said. Sanchez said Madrid remains a staunch member.
"There is no debate - we meet our obligations, we are a loyal partner," Sanchez said. "The position of the Spanish Government is clear: full cooperation with allies, but always within the framework of international law." A Nato spokesperson declined to comment.
Spain has emerged as one of Europe's most outspoken critics of US President Donald Trump and his campaign against Iran, which Sanchez has described called illegal.
The country has barred the use of its airspace and the two US bases on its territory for operations supporting the strikes on Iran, angering Washington.
Last year, Sanchez irked Trump by becoming the only country to reject a new Nato benchmark to spend 5% of economic output on defence. Trump has labelled Spain's leadership "terrible" and has repeatedly threatened retaliation.
"We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain," Trump said last month. Those threats, however, have yet to materialise.
Expelling a country from Nato or suspending its participation is not a scenario foreseen in the alliance's rules. One option could involve preventing Spanish officials from taking senior roles within the alliance....
