Sampada, Varnika fashion UP's first win in one day trophy
LUCKNOW, Feb. 11 -- Sparkling knocks by openers Sampada Dixit and Varnika helped former runners-up Uttar Pradesh crush Odisha by five wickets to notch up their first win in the Senior Women's One Day Trophy, at the Sanosara Cricket Ground B in Rajkot on Tuesday.
Whereas Sampada struck century, Varnika smashed a half-century as Uttar Pradesh chased down 244 runs target in 40.5 overs in their Elite Group A encounter. In both their previous two matches, Uttar Pradesh faced defeats.
Both Sampada and Varnika batted well from the very start when Uttar Pradesh began the run chase, stitching together 106 runs for the first wickety to lay a solid foundation.
Varnika was the first to go as she was caught by SB Lorence off Sushree Dibyadarshini after scoring 54-ball 67, laced with 12 boundaries and a six.
Though wickets kept falling on regular intervals from the other end, Sampada kept hitting the ball at consummate ease while scoring 106 in 117 balls with the help of 12 hits to the fence. She was caught by Taranna Pradhan off Jyoti K Prasad.
Sonali Singh (17) and Anjali Singh (14) made small but useful contributions before keeper-batter Nishi Kashyap (17, 12b, 2x4) and Arju (9, 9b, 1x4) added unbeaten 23 runs for the sixth wicket.
For Odisha, Jyoti K Prasad 92/36) and Sushree Dibyadarshini (1/48) were the wicket takers.
Earlier, opener Madhuri Meheta (68, 87b, 7x4) and captain Sushree Dibyadarshini (63, 55b, 8x4) hit half centuries to help Odisha post 343/6 in 41 overs while batting first after winning the toss.
Tanmayee Behra (48, 47b, 9x4) and Sarita Meher (29, 23b, 5x4) also made useful contributions for the side. Anjali Singh remained the most successful bowler for Uttar Pradesh, bagging 2/30, whereas Arju, Archana Devi and Khushi Tyagi shared three wickets between them.
With this win, Uttar Pradesh reached fourth position in the eight-team event with four points. Karnataka and Maharashtra (12 points each) are in first and second position, respectively, whereas Odisha stand at third position with eight points.
Now, Uttar Pradesh play against Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.
The BCCI on Tuesday shifted the Ranji Trophy semi-final match between Uttarakhand and Karnataka at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here from February 15 to 19 due to the non-availability of adequate facilities in Dehradun.
There is no change in the venue of the second semi-final as hosts Bengal take on J&K at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground, Kalyani in Kolkata.
"Yes, Cricket Association of Uttarakhand has picked Lucknow's Ekana stadium to host Karnataka in the semi-final match as the pitch at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun is not up to the mark," said CAU's chief, Deepak Mehra....
