Rs.8-cr jewellery, licenced revolver stolen from villa
LUCKNOW, May 3 -- Jewellery worth over Rs.8 crore, along with a licenced revolver, was stolen from a villa belonging to a Gorakhpur-based contractor in a high-security residential colony in Barabanki, police said.
The incident occurred at Shalimar Paradise under Kotwali Nagar area. The victim, Ajay Singh Baghel, said he had stored jewellery accumulated over three generations in the villa. He had left for Gorakhpur and later Mumbai with his family on April 19 and returned on April 30 evening, only to find valuables worth Rs.8-10 crore missing.
Police registered an FIR two days after the incident and obtained a detailed list of stolen jewellery instead of mentioning weight and quantity in the complaint due to the large volume involved.
Investigators suspect the role of the driver, who had been hired two years ago on a recommendation. During verification, deleted data from his phone was recovered, allegedly revealing photographs of locker and cupboard keys. CCTV cameras and lights inside the house were found switched off on April 27 night.
Police said the driver used to visit the premises regularly for cleaning and often stayed back even after the domestic help left. CCTV footage also purportedly showed him arriving in a car instead of a motorcycle in recent days.
The contractor told police that his ailing wife, who had been bedridden for three months, occasionally relied on the driver in his absence, which may have given him access to sensitive information about valuables.
Circle officer (city) Sangam Kumar is leading the probe with surveillance and SWAT teams. Inspector SK Singh said a case has been registered and all angles, including the driver's role, are under investigation.htc...
