PRAYAGRAJ, July 29 -- In an initiative to curb road accidents and improve commuter safety, the public works department (PWD) has proposed a Rs.29.24-crore safety plan covering 106 roads across Prayagraj district. The comprehensive proposal aims to strengthen road infrastructure at accident-prone locations through engineering interventions designed to reduce crashes and fatalities. The proposal, prepared following a review meeting chaired by the principal secretary with senior district officials, has been sent to the state government for approval, officials said. The proposed works will cover 106 identified roads spanning nearly 831 km under the Road Safety, Black Spot and Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programmes. Once approved, the plan will focus on engineering improvements at vulnerable stretches and intersections, with the objective of making roads safer for motorists, pedestrians and other commuters. "Following directions from the state government, we have submitted the road safety action plan for approval. As soon as the budget is sanctioned, safety devices and traffic-calming measures will be installed at the identified accident-prone locations," said Mohammad Arshad, assistant engineer, provincial division, PWD. According to the PWD's provincial division, a total of 90 improvement works have been identified at T- and Y-junctions covering 583.98 km of roads, with an estimated cost of Rs.16.08 crore. The proposed measures include the installation of speed tables, rumble strips, traffic signboards, road markings, delineators and other traffic-calming infrastructure at intersections and junctions to regulate vehicle speeds, improve visibility and enhance commuter safety. Separately, under the Zero Fatality District programme, 14 accident-prone roads covering 243.16 km have been identified for safety interventions at an estimated cost of Rs.12.90 crore....
