MEERUT, May 30 -- A dreaded criminal carrying a bounty of Rs.1 lakh, was killed in a police encounter in Saharanpur on Friday following a gunfight between police personnel and armed miscreants. The encounter occurred near Doomwala village on the Sarsawa-Chilkana route, while one of Ehsan's associates managed to flee the scene. The miscreant has been identified as Ehsan. Two policemen, including an inspector and a head constable, sustained bullet injuries during the operation and were admitted to hospital. Officials said both are currently in stable condition. According to DIG Abhishek Singh, Ehsan was involved in around 13 robbery cases and was wanted in connection with a major dacoity case registered in Behat. A reward of Rs.1 lakh had been declared on him. He was listed among Saharanpur's top 10 criminals and was a history-sheeter under Nakur police station limits. Police said the encounter began after they received information on Friday afternoon that two armed criminals were moving suspiciously between Pilkhani and Doomwala villages in the Sarsawa area and were allegedly planning to commit a crime. Acting on the tip-off, police teams launched a joint checking operation in the area. During the operation, the criminals allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the police team. In the retaliatory firing, Ehsan, son of Riyasat and a resident of Kapuri village under Nakur police station, sustained bullet injuries to his chest and leg. He died on the spot. However, his associate managed to flee after taking advantage of the chaos during the encounter. Sarsawa station house officer inspector Pravesh Sharma suffered two bullet injuries to his left hand during the gunfight. Head constable Sonu was also injured after being shot. DIG Singh said the entire operation was led by Saharanpur SSP Abhinandan and involved police teams from both Chilkana and Sarsawa police stations.
