Kolkata, Aug. 9 -- A political storm erupted in West Bengal after a local Trinamool Congress leader allegedly died in police custody at Halisahar in North 24 Parganas on Saturday. The deceased, Birju Keot, was the husband of Jenny Sharma Keot, ex-councillor of Kanchraoara Municipality. Police said he was arrested on August 1 and booked under BNS sections relating to cheating, assault, outraging a woman's modesty and the Arms Act. "On Friday night my husband was beaten up mercilessly inside the police station. His hands and feet were tied... Blood had oozed out of his ears. There were multiple injury marks on his back," Keot told media. Police, however, refuted the charge. "He suddenly fell ill in the morning. He was rushed to the JNM Hospital in Nadia where doctors declared him dead. An enquiry by a judicial magistrate has been ordered," said an officer. TMC's Abhishek Banerjee said on X: "His name was not in the FIR. He was still picked up by @WBPolice. He died in custody."
