Robotic surgery offers new hope for kids with complex ailments: docs
LUCKNOW, Oct. 31 -- Robotic surgery is emerging as an effective option for treating complex medical conditions in children, particularly congenital deformities, urinary tract obstructions, kidney disorders and abdominal ailments, doctors at King George's Medical University (KGMU) said on Friday.
The technology allows surgeons to perform delicate procedures with greater precision, reducing surgical trauma, blood loss and post-operative pain, shared the doctors during the 14th conference of the Society of Pediatric Urology, organised by KGMU's department of pediatric surgery at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Scientific Convention Centre. The three day conference which began on October 30 will conclude on November 1.
Dr JD Rawat, head of the department of pediatric surgery, said operating on children was particularly challenging because their organs and body structures were small and delicate. Protecting surrounding nerves, blood vessels and healthy tissues during surgery required exceptional precision.
He said robotic systems equipped with high-definition 3D cameras and ultra-fine instruments enabled surgeons to perform complex procedures through small incisions. This resulted in less pain, reduced blood loss, a lower risk of infection and shorter hospital stays, allowing children to resume normal activities sooner.
Dr Archika Gupta said the robotic system translated a surgeon's hand movements into smaller, controlled actions. Its flexible instrument tips could move in multiple directions, making complicated procedures easier in confined anatomical spaces, particularly involving the urinary tract, kidneys, intestines and chest. Dr SN Kuril clarified that robot did not operate independently. The surgeon controls every movement through a console.
The doctors also observed that robotic surgery, however, was not suitable or necessary for every child. Its use depends on factors such as child's age, weight, severity of condition and availability of equipment. htc...
