LUCKNOW, June 25 -- The department of respiratory medicine at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) successfully performed its first Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) procedure, on Wednesday. Doctors at the institute said the introduction of the technology is expected to significantly improve diagnoses of diseases affecting the lungs and lymph nodes inside the chest, allowing patients to receive treatment at an earlier stage. _Prof (Dr) Ajay Kumar Verma, head of the department of respiratory medicine, said EBUS is a minimally invasive technique that helps doctors examine lymph nodes and tissues located deep inside the chest. It is particularly useful in diagnosing lung cancer, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and several other respiratory disorders with greater precision. He said early and accurate diagnosis often plays a crucial role in determining treatment outcomes, especially in diseases such as lung cancer where delays can reduce treatment options. Doctors said the availability of EBUS at RMLIMS will enable many patients to access advanced diagnostic services within Lucknow itself, reducing the need for referrals to specialised centres elsewhere. Dr Hemant Kumar said that the addition of the technology marks an important step towards improving respiratory healthcare services in the region.
