PRAYAGRAJ/VARANASI, Sept. 3 -- Rising water levels of the Ganga and Varuna rivers have displaced 2,841 people from 624 families in Varanasi, with low- lying areas inundated following incessant rain, authorities said on Wednesday. The Ganga was flowing at 70.38 metres in Varanasi and continued to rise, according to the Central Water Commission. Of the 624 affected families, 395 have taken shelter in 16 active flood relief camps, while 229 are staying in their neighbourhoods. Saraiya, Dhelwaria and Salarpur are among the worst-affected areas, with flooding also reported in Rampur Dhab, Mokalpur, Nakhighat, Koniya, Lakshmisen Pur, Hukulganj, Daniyalpur, Sikraul, Chitauni, Kotwa, Koraut and Paigambarpur. Officials said 98 flood relief kits and 11,255 food packets, including 3,110 distributed on Wednesday, had been provided at relief camps. The administration also distributed 732 fruits and 490 packets of milk. In Prayagraj, the Ganga and Yamuna continued to rise, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting connectivity to more than 50 villages. The Ganga was flowing at 82.86 metres at Phaphamau, less than two metres below the danger mark of 84.734 metres, while the Yamuna at Naini stood at 82.20 metres. Floodwaters reached the steps of the Nagvasuki Temple, prompting closure of its main entrance. Houses along the riverfront road opposite the temple were also submerged. Water Police teams were deployed in vulnerable riverside areas. Flooding was reported in several city localities, including Rajapur, Beli Kachhar, Chhota Baghada, Bada Baghada, Govindpur and Kareli. Prayagraj district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma inspected the Salori floodplain and directed officials to ensure essential facilities at relief centres.
