LUCKNOW, Sept. 3 -- As soon as ace batter and skipper Rinku Singh and leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari left to play in the Duleep Trophy last week, season-two champions Meerut Mavericks began to feel their absence. The side slipped to two defeats and saw a third game washed out in UPT20 League season 4, a slump that underlined just how much both players have influenced the Mavericks' campaign so far. Rinku's numbers tell the story. His 169 runs including an unbeaten 55 at a strike rate of 219.48. Zeeshan, who has been the tournament's most penetrative bowler from the start, returned figures of 17 wickets at an astonishing average of 7.81 in seven matches. Their return ahead of the play-offs comes at the perfect moment as the Mavericks host local rivals Lucknow Falcons at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, and their availability could well tilt the balance in a high-stakes encounter. "It's good that both are back in the side for the playoffs. Now, I feel more confident," said Mavericks chief coach Utkarsh Chandra on the eve of Qualifier I on Wednesday. Both Rinku and Zeeshan were with Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy semi-final in Bengaluru. Rinku found rhythm again, stroking a composed half-century in the longer format that should only bolster his confidence for the T20 playoffs. Zeeshan, although part of the squad, did not get to bowl there, but his presence alone restored depth and variety to the Mavericks' bowling unit. Batting remains Meerut's obvious strength, and Rinku's inclusion strengthens their finishing options immeasurably. His ability to close innings with power and intent gives the Mavericks a clear advantage in the death overs, and his recent fifty in the longer format hints at a batter who has regained form and temperament. For Meerut to fully capitalize, their top order must provide a platform early on and set the tone in the powerplay so that Rinku and the middle order can accelerate later. The Mavericks also benefit from a nucleus of dependable domestic performers and a couple of impact overseas players who can either stabilise an innings or turn the strike rate up as required. The challenge for Meerut will be to balance aggression with sensible shot selection on a surface that looks likely to offer assistance to both batters and bowlers at different stages. The Falcons, meanwhile, will lean on home advantage and a leadership core led by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who guided the side to finish second in the points table with six wins. Their familiarity with Ekana's dimensions and conditions gives them an edge in planning how to counter Meerut's strengths. Lucknow's batting mix, including Ajeet Verma, who has so far scored 262 runs at 34.43, an assortment of young power-hitters alongside seasoned anchors, aims to see off early pressure while maintaining a competitive scoring rate. Where the match could be decided is in bowling matchups.
