Rinku, Zeeshan guide MM continue winning in UPT20 League
LUCKNOW, Aug. 26 -- Rinku Singh-led Meerut Mavericks defended a competitive 96 and beat Kanpur Superstars by 19 runs in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium here on Tuesday. The truncated five-over contest produced quick strikes, fearless hitting and some tidy death bowling that ultimately swung the contest in Meerut's favour.
Meerut set a challenging target after an explosive start from their top order. Opener Swastik Chhikara flashed intent but fell early for 11, departing to Ajay Kumar as Kanpur struck back. Rituraj Sharma followed shortly after, taken at slip by Satyam Sangu off the clever Sangu-Aj combination.
The Mavericks, however, recovered through a brutal cameo from Rinku Singh, the skipper, who bludgeoned 30 off just 10 balls before falling to Karn Sharma.
Divyansh Joshi and Divyansh Rajput steadied the ship with smart, pressure-free hitting, rotating strike and punishing loose balls. Meerut finished strongly at 96/3 after five aggressive overs - a score that looked defendable on a used Ekana surface with boundaries a little harder to come by.
Chasing 97, Sameer Rizvi's Kanpur reply never really got going. Rizvi's brief, hopeful 22 was the bright spot early, but he was well caught by Yash Garg off Zeeshan Ansari as Kanpur lost momentum.
Adarsh Singh provided a quick 28 but was also undone by Ansari, who turned the match with his double strike. Satyam Sangu, promoted to accelerate, was dismissed without scoring, and Kanpur never recovered the required tempo.
Zeeshan Ansari and Kartik Tyagi combined smartly to strangle the chase. Ansari's tight two-over spell yielded two vital wickets and conceded just six runs; his accuracy and ability to bowl in the stumps prevented big hits. Kartik Tyagi's opening burst set the tone, and Karn Sharma's crucial late strike removed Rinku in the Meerut innings, but it wasn't enough for Kanpur to chase under mounting pressure. Extras in the form of 12 wides from Meerut's bowling innings briefly helped Kanpur's case, but the batters failed to take advantage.
Mavericks' bowlers executed their plans under pressure, defending 96 with disciplined lines and clever variations. Divyansh Joshi and Divyansh Rajput finishing not out for Meerut highlighted depth in batting, while Ansari and Tyagi's bowling will be remembered as the match-winning combination....
