Retired temple officer held by SIT
India, July 18 -- Dehradun: A special investigation team (SIT) of the Chamoli police on Friday arrested a retired temple officer in connection with the alleged theft of donations from the Badrinath temple, officials said.
Police said Rajendra Chauhan was caught on CCTV footage pocketing cash from the donation room on three occasions before retiring on June 30.
Station House Officer of Badrinath police station Mahadev Uniyal said, "We have found the involvement of former temple officer, Rajendra Chauhan, in the Badrinath temple donation theft case. He was found pocketing cash on three occasions on June 22, 25 and 29 in the CCTV examined by us. He was retired on June 30."
Uniyal said Chauhan was arrested on Friday afternoon and will be produced before a court on Saturday. Police had earlier arrested suspended Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) personal assistant Pramod Nautiyal in the case. "Primary evidence suggests that the two accused conspired in the case. However, we will interrogate him further to ascertain the full extent of his role," he said.
The officer said the police will move the sessions court on Saturday seeking custody of Nautiyal, who was arrested on Sunday and remanded to 14-day judicial custody the following day.
