Retd B'khand varsity official dies as SUV hits scooter
JHANSI, April 26 -- A 70-year-old man died by a speeding SUV allegedly struck the scooter he was riding near the Bundelkhand University campus here on Saturday, police said. The driver and others inside the vehicle fled the scene after the accident, leaving the SUV behind, they added.
The deceased, identified as Maniram Verma, retired from Bundelkhand University as a sub-registrar about a decade ago and was residing in a residential area on the university campus. He had gone out on his scooter to purchase household items when the tragedy occurred. The collision was so forceful that he was dragged several meters along with his scooter.
SSP Jhansi BBGTS Murthy said the SUV driver identified as Rajat has been arrested. He is a constable with the UP Police posted in Jhansi. He has been suspended and departmental action has been initiated against him," Murthy added.
SP (city) Preeti Singh said: "An FIR has been registered based on the vehicle number. Necessary action will be taken. The post-mortem examination has been conducted and the body has been handed over to the family," she added.
