Haldwani, July 26 -- Around seven months after forest officials in Udham Singh Nagar district rescued a one-and-a-half year old elephant cub, authorities are preparing to shift him to the Corbett Tiger Reserve from the Sanjay Van enclosure. Officials said the move aimed to provide better care and companionship to the cub, who was named Rustam after his rescue, and was living alone since the death of Raja, another calf rescued at around the same time at Rustam, in December last year. Tarai Central divisional forest officer (DFO) Umesh Chandra Tiwari said Raja, an injured one-month-old elephant calf, was rescued from Tanda Range in January 2025. About three months later, Rustom was rescued after getting separated from his herd in Banna Kheda in Bazpur. "Rustam is now around one-and-a-half years old and his food requirements have increased considerably. The Sanjay Van enclosure has limited facilities, making it difficult to meet his growing needs. We sought permission from the chief wildlife warden to shift him either to Rajaji National Park or Corbett Tiger Reserve. Approval has now been granted for his transfer to Corbett, and preparations are underway," Tiwari said.
