Lucknow, Sept. 29 -- The damaged elevated stretch of the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway at Banthra will finally reopen to traffic from Tuesday evening, more than a fortnight after it was closed following damage to the road surface. The Kanpur-Lucknow carriageway near Royal Guest House and Azad Vihar Colony in Banthra was shut from September 14, a day after debris started falling from the elevated road late on September 13. Since then, vehicles heading towards Lucknow were being diverted to the service road after being brought down from the elevated section near Bani. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had initially planned to reopen the stretch on September 25, but persistent rain delayed the laying of the final bituminous layer, delaying the reopening by four days. NHAI project director Navratna said the structural repair has already been completed. A damaged span of about 2.5 metres was replaced with a higher-capacity span, with the structural work completed by September 24.
