Relief to 21 of 25 AIADMK MLAs who backed TVK
CHENNAI, June 10 -- In a major relief to 21 of the 25 AIADMK legislators who voted in favour of the ruling TVK government during the crucial floor test, Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar on Tuesday said no disqualification proceedings would be initiated against them.
However, he clarified that action would be taken against the other four AIADMK legislators who voted in favour of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
A petition was filed on behalf of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami seeking the disqualification of four legislators - S Jayakumar (Perundurai), K Maragadham Kumaravel (Madurantakam), Sathya Bama (Dharapuram) and Isakki Subaya (Ambasamudram) - out of the 25 legislators who voted in favour of the ruling TVK on May 13, he said.
"I would like to inform you all, while forgiveness has been granted to 21 out of the 25 members, action has been initiated against the remaining 4 members," he told reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
There would not be any disqualification proceedings against the remaining 21 rebel AIADMK legislators who supported the TVK as they had sought forgiveness and it was also accepted by Palaniswami, Prabhakar said.
As the TVK lacked a majority to form the government, the Congress, which won five seats, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which won two seats, extended their support to the party. However, during the crucial floor test demanded by Governor Rajendra Arlekar to prove the government's majority, 25 rebel AIADMK MLAs voted in favour of the ruling government.
Prabhakar explained that, as per the rules, a letter was submitted by the AIADMK demanding action against the 25 rebel MLAs.
"However, I received another letter that the 21 members have expressed regret and sought forgiveness. A decision has been made after reviewing the letter that no further action is required to be taken against them," he said.
To another query, Prabhakar said the action would be necessitated because the four legislators violated their party's (AIADMK) whip order that was issued to them. Recalling that the Speaker's office received four letters from Palaniswami, Prabhakar said, "Consequently, the letters received from Palaniswami stated that no disqualification arises for these 21 members as per the law," he said.
The Speaker said, "I carefully considered each of the four letters sent by Palaniswami. I conducted a proper inquiry, took key points into account as per Assembly rules, and finally, since Palaniswami explicitly stated in his letters that he forgives the votes cast by the aforementioned 21 members on 13-5-2026 and that no disqualification would arise for them as a result, I accept this request for forgiveness."
The 21 legislators are - S S Sukumar , N S Nataraj , Haribaskar , K Mohan , K Dileepan Jaishankar, Natham Viswanathan , S P Velumani , K P Anbalagan , R Kamaraj , C Vijayabhaskar , M R Vijayabhaskar , K C Veeramani , K Adhithan , Arunmozhi Thevan , Leema Rose Martin , K Ravi Manoharan , S Sekar , R Rakesh , Maragadham Vetrivel , P Balakrishna Reddy and C Ve Shanmugam .
Prabhakar said he was dropping all further proceedings against the aforementioned 21 individuals as per the law.
To another query, he underlined that the support extended to the government during the voting by the 21 MLAs would be 'valid'.
"The debates regarding them defying whip's order due to internal party issues come only later. Therefore, the votes cast by the 25 members in the voting are indeed valid," he said....
