LUCKNOW, Aug. 1 -- Doctors at King George's Medical University (KGMU) removed a rare accessory esophageal cyst from the neck of a six-year-old boy from Ambedkar Nagar after a complex surgery, restoring his ability to swallow normally. Prof Anand Pandey of department of paediatric surgery said examination and a CT scan revealed a cyst arising from the esophagus that had displaced the major neck artery and vein. The cyst, attached to the cervical esophagus, was removed during the two-hour procedure. Prof Pandey said the condition is extremely rare, with fewer than 50 such cases reported in medical literature, stated a press release shared with the media on Friday. The surgery was performed under the supervision of Prof Jiledar Rawat by a team comprising Prof Anand Pandey, Dr Kaushal Kulkarni, Dr Manish and Dr Shreya, while the anaesthesia team was led by Prof Satish Verma, stated the release. Abhinav, son of Ashok and a resident of Daultabad village in Jaitpur area of Ambedkar Nagar district, was brought to KGMU with a neck swelling that had persisted for six months and difficulty in swallowing for a month. After treatment in his native district failed to provide relief, he was referred to the university's Department of Pediatric Surgery, it stated further.
