RAM TEMPLE DONATION ROW: All eyes on key Trust meeting today
Ayodhya, July 6 -- A month after the Ram temple donation controversy first came to light and nearly three weeks after the Uttar Pradesh government's three-member Special Investigation Team began probing the allegations, all eyes are set on the executive committee meeting of the Shri Ram Janambhoomi Teerth Kshetra in Ayodhya on Monday.
In the first meeting since the allegations surfaced, the resignations of Trust general secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra, the ongoing SIT probe and management of the Ram Mandir in the future to avoid such incidents are three of the top agenda items, HT has learnt. The audit report and the 2025-26 financial statement is the fourth point on the agenda. A fifth point says other issues could also be discussed with approval of Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, the trust chairman.
Swami Govind Dev Giri, treasurer of the Trust, is expected to present the resignations of Rai and Mishra before the executive committee for a decision. Both Rai and Mishra are expected to present their view point at the meeting, according to people familiar with the matter said. A chief executive officer could be appointed for professional management of the Ram temple, they added.
Five agenda items for the meeting were mentioned in a letter dated June 28 by the treasurer Swami Govind Dev Giri.
The letter was confirmed by an official working with the trust,
On June 27, Govind Dev Giri had issued a letter confirming that the resignations of Mishra and Rai had been submitted.
Breaking their silence on the issue in recent days, two trustees - Mahant Dinendra Das of the Nirmohi Akhara and Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati - have said the theft of donations is condemnable and the guilty will not be spared.
The SIT, which was constituted on June 13, has visited Ayodhya in two phases for its investigation, first camping there from June 15 to 20 and then again visiting the temple town for the probe for two days on July 2 and 3. The SIT has questioned key functionaries, including Champat Rai, Anil Mishra and Gopal Rao, the temple administrator. It submitted its preliminary report to the state government June 23.
Following the registration of an FIR on June 25 on a complaint lodged by Krishna Mohan, a trustee, the police arrested eight men on June 26-Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Ram Shankar Yadav 'Tinnu', Manish Yadav, Subhash Srivastava, Avinash Shukla, Ramashankar Mishra, and Karunesh Pandey.
The first information report was registered against eight named accused and other unidentified people under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 306, 316(5), 317(4), 317(5), 61 and 3(5), relating to offences such as criminal breach of trust, cheating, theft and criminal conspiracy, along with Section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Since the arrests, the police have shown the recovery of a total of Rs 79.85 lakh cash from seven of the eight arrested men.
Monday's meeting is scheduled to start at 3pm at Mani Ram Das Chhavni Ashram, where Trust chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das resides.
Amid media attention on the high-profile meeting, the area around the Mani Ram Das Chhavni will be cordoned off.
Ayodhya district magistrate Shashank Tripathi and senior superintendent of police Gaurav Grover visited the venue late Saturday night to review arrangements for the meeting.
The Pran Pratishtha or consecration ceremony of the temple was held on January 22, 2024, over four years after the Supreme Court's 2019 verdict in the Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid title dispute.
When the trust was constituted on February 5, 2020 following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement in the Lok Sabha, it had 15 members - four ex officio members and 11 others. Among the 11, Kameshwar Chaupal and Vimlendra Mohan Pratap Mishra passed away in February and August 2025 respectively. Krishna Mohan, a retired Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer, was appointed in place of Kameshwar Chaupal in September 2025. It was Krishna Mohan who lodged the FIR in connection with the Ram temple donation controversy. Vimlendra Mohan Pratap Mishra's place remains vacant.
Four others, including chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, 89, Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati, 90, Swami Paramanand, 90, and Supreme Court senior advocate Keshav Parasaran, 92, are ailing. Mahant Nritya Gopal Das has returned to Ayodhya after undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Lucknow and is expected to chair Monday's meeting. Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati too has reached Ayodhya for the deliberations.
According to the trust's deed, a two-thirds majority is required to approve the resignations.
It is not clear just how many members will be able to attend the meeting and whether a quorum will be attained.
In effect, there might only be six members with voting rights at the meeting - chairman Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, treasurer Swami Govind Dev Giri, Swami Vishwaprasanna Tirtha, Krishna Mohan, Mahant Dinendra Das of the Nirmohi Akhara and Swami Vasudevanand Saraswati.
The SIT - comprising Lucknow divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, inspector general of police (Lucknow range) Kiran S and special secretary (finance) Neel Ratan - received a 15-day extension on July 1.
It is now also looking at the entire financial ecosystem of the Trust since its formation on February 5, 2020, according to state government officials.
