Ram temple donation probe tracks assets; cops to seek custody of accused
LUCKNOW/ AYODHYA, July 1 -- The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya has widened, with police tracking the assets of the eight arrested accused while preparing to seek their custody for sustained interrogation. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is set to visit Ayodhya anytime soon to review the probe and chart its next course.
Investigators have begun scrutinising the movable and immovable assets of the accused after uncovering a land purchase worth over Rs.23 lakh allegedly made by prime suspect Luvkush Mishra in Ayodhya's Sahadatganj area. Police are also probing purchases of smartphones, washing machines and other household appliances.
Meanwhile, investigating officer Ashutosh Tiwari interrogated one of the arrested accused, Avinash Shukla, inside the district jail after obtaining court permission. He was questioned about the alleged diversion of donations, cash movement and the role of the other accused. Sources said interrogation was aimed at corroborating evidence before seeking custody of all eight accused. The questioning is significant because the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had reportedly recovered Rs.20 lakh from Shukla on June 5, weeks before the FIR was registered.
