KANPUR, Sept. 2 -- Heavy rain late on Monday night caused a seven-foot-deep and five-foot-wide crater to open on the Ganga Expressway near the Basiratganj toll plaza in Unnao, forcing the maintenance agency to divert traffic and undertake repairs. The crater was found at kilometre 423.6 on the Prayagraj-bound lane during night patrolling by Patel Infrastructure, which maintains the stretch. The damaged portion was barricaded and traffic was diverted about 300 metres before the spot. Patel Infrastructure manager RS Mishra said water accumulated at the location due to its proximity to a high-tension power line, which limited the height at which the toll plaza could be built. He said the heavy rain caused the road to sink. Repairs were completed on Tuesday and the road was restored. A safety wall will be constructed to prevent further water accumulation. In a purported video of the crater that went viral on social media, part of the damaged stretch appeared to be covered with a carpet and cordoned off with safety cones. Reacting to the video, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, in a post on X, said, "This is BJP's 'carpeted' development... I had heard that cracks are covered with carpets, but here the potholes of the Ganga Expressway are being covered. Some days ago, fans were installed on the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway. Is the BJP turning the expressway into a drawing room for its corruption?"...
