rahul launches campaign against great nicobar project
New Delhi, June 6 -- Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday called on citizens to demand that the Centre scrap the Great Nicobar Holistic Development Project, describing it as "one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes" against India's natural and tribal heritage.
Launching an online petition on World Environment Day, Gandhi urged people to oppose the project while backing the expansion of INS Baaz, the strategically important naval base on Great Nicobar Island.
"The forest hasn't fallen yet. Add your name and force the government to protect Great Nicobar Island. Expand the INS Baaz Naval base since it's been demanding it for five years - but don't destroy a rainforest that can never be rebuilt," Gandhi said in the petition. The Leader of Opposition also released a video on X of his recent visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, including Great Nicobar, where he highlighted concerns over the environmental and social impact of the proposed project.
The video featured footage of rainforest areas where trees are proposed to be felled, coral reefs that Gandhi explored through scuba diving, meetings with members of the Tribal Council of Great Nicobar, and interviews with researchers who alleged that provisions of the Forest Rights Act were not properly implemented. Researchers also warned that the project could damage coral reefs, which are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act.
"This is India's treasure, India's asset. I was disturbed that such beauty is going to be destroyed," Gandhi said in the video....
