LUCKNOW, Feb. 14 -- Two days after the mysterious deaths of two childhood friends whose bodies were found on a railway track in Rahimabad, police on Friday said fresh conversations with their families have revealed a possible emotional trigger behind the tragedy, even as the exact cause of death remains unclear. Police also did not rule out the possibility of a same sex relationship. AK Trigunayak, SHO, Rahimabad, said earlier the families were too grief-stricken to speak, but statements recorded subsequently have brought new details to light. "Even though the exact cause is still unknown, family members, including the husband of the married woman, told us that she wanted her childhood friend to marry her brother-in-law so that they could continue living together as they did since childhood," the SHO said. The friend, married in Unnao district six months ago, floated the idea of the match both at her in-laws' home and with her family in Lucknow, police said. However, the proposal was not accepted. "Family members indicated that the disagreement over this proposal may have led to emotional distress," Trigunayak added. The bodies of the two women were found on the railway tracks earlier this week, hours after some villagers claimed to have seen them walking hand-in-hand. Their slippers and shawls were found some distance from the spot where the bodies were discovered, raising questions about the sequence of events. Post-mortem examinations were conducted the same evening. Police have not publicly disclosed detailed findings but said no conclusion has yet been drawn on whether the deaths were accidental or intentional. "Even family members are confused. The married woman's husband stated there was no dispute in the marriage. The girls' families have not raised suspicion against anyone," the SHO said. When asked whether police were probing the possibility of a same-sex relationship angle, Trigunayak said, "We are looking at all angles. Nothing can be ruled out at this stage." Police said call detail records and other technical evidence is being examined to reconstruct the final hours of the two friends. Statements of villagers and relatives are also being recorded as part of the ongoing investigation....
