Rachna wins two gold medals in shooting
LUCKNOW, June 9 -- A reciepient of Arjuna awardee in 2000, former ace shooter Rachna Govil made a remarkable comeback at the 30th Pre-State UP Shooting Championship in Noida, claiming two gold medals in the 10m air pistol events and announcing her return to top-level shooting after a 15-year gap.
Lucknow's Govil, who also happens to be a former executive director of Sports Authority of India, topped both the Master Women Individual 10m Air Pistol (NR) and the Senior Master Women Individual 10m Air Pistol (NR), posting a solid score of 357 out of 400.
Her double-gold performance was a statement of resilience and precision. Returning to competitive shooting after a long break, Govil, who had the 3000m national record in her name in athletics in 1981, demonstrated the technical control and calm temperament required in pistol events, converting every opportunity into podium finishes.
The score of 357 reflects consistent accuracy across the match and was enough to separate her from a competitive field at the Pre-State level - a key stepping stone toward the Uttar Pradesh State Championship.
Govil's victories carry deeper significance for her personal journey and for regional sport. Lifting the pistol competitively after 15 years and immediately delivering golds provides an encouraging narrative for athletes who consider comebacks later in their careers. Her performance will inspire fellow shooters in Uttar Pradesh, especially women and masters category athletes, showing that focused preparation and mental toughness can bridge lengthy breaks.
Speaking after the event, Rachna conveyed humility and ambition. She's happy with the results but believes "a lot can still be done." That mindset - celebrating success while targeting further improvement - bodes well for her future campaigns.
Rohit Heights notched up a convincing seven-wicket win over Greenwood Titans and lifted the glittering trophy of the Residents Cricket League (RCL) Season 1 here late on Sunday night. While batting first after winning the toss, Greenwood Titans could score just 52/7 in 10 overs. In reply, Rohit Heights romped home with one ball to spare at the loss of just three wickets....
