Purported video of Aban's fatal crash surfaces, police yet to verify authenticity
JHANSI/LUCKNOW, Aug. 13 -- A dashcam video purportedly showing the road accident that killed Aban Ahmed, 21, son of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, and his friend Sonu in Jhansi on August 6 has surfaced on social media, prompting police to verify its authenticity.
The footage appears to show a speeding SUV overtaking a pickup before losing control and crashing into a road divider. The impact sends the vehicle several feet into the air before it lands back on the road.
Jhansi SSP BBGTS Murthy said the authenticity of the video was being verified before any conclusion could be drawn about its connection with the accident.Circle officer (CO), Moth, Sunil Kumar Sharma, said in a statement issued on the SSP's instructions, "A video is going viral on social media platforms, which is being linked to a recent accident. As per the instructions of the senior superintendent of police, Jhansi, the authenticity of the said video is being verified."The accident took place in the Poonch police station area, around 70 km before Jhansi, when Aban was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is lodged in Jhansi jail.
Aban was travelling with four friends in the SUV. His associate Zaid was driving, while Aban was seated in the front passenger seat and Sonu directly behind him. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at around 120 kmph when it crashed into the divider.
The impact was on the side where Aban was seated, causing him severe injuries. Aban and Sonu died at the spot shortly after the crash.
While police are yet to authenticate the video, villagers familiar with the accident said the location visible in the footage appeared to match the crash site. They pointed to a house visible near the road, saying it was located close to the accident spot.Residents also said the sequence shown in the footage, in which the vehicle overtakes another vehicle before losing control and hitting the divider, broadly resembles what they witnessed after the crash.
However, these accounts do not independently establish that the footage was recorded on August 6 or that the vehicle shown was Aban's SUV. Police verification is awaited.
If authenticated, the footage could provide investigators with a visual account of the moments before the fatal collision, including the overtaking manoeuvre and the vehicle's subsequent loss of control....
