Protesters torch accused's belongings, stall funeral
KANPUR, Jan. 25 -- Angry residents in Bargarh town of Chitrakoot district set fire to the belongings of the accused and stalled the funeral of 13-year-old Ayush for several hours on Saturday morning. The fresh round of protests came a day after thousands had blocked the national highway demanding justice in the alleged abduction and murder case.
The teenager, son of local cloth trader Ashok Kesarwani, was allegedly abducted for ransom on Thursday evening by two accused. Around 9 am Saturday, a group of residents gathered outside the room where the accused had been staying and pulled out household items, including a motorcycle, furniture and storage boxes, before setting them ablaze. Police personnel present at the spot failed to intervene, prompting resentment among locals who accused the administration of inaction, eyewitnesses said.
The family, en route to the cremation ground, stopped the funeral procession at the market area and placed Ayush's body on the road. Protesters demanded direct intervention from chief minister Yogi Adityanath, claiming there had been no response from his office. "There has been no statement, no message from the chief minister," locals said, insisting the family be allowed to speak to him before proceeding with the cremation.
Additional police forces were rushed to the area as slogans were raised and traffic came to a halt. Senior officers held talks with the family and community representatives, assuring them of strict action. After several hours of persuasion, the family agreed to continue with the last rites and the body was taken to the cremation ground.
A day earlier, thousands of residents had staged a protest blocking the national highway.
Police had neutralised the prime accused and arrested another in an injured state within 12 hours of the crime. A hunt is on for the third accused....
