Protesters demand action against vandalism at mayor's residence
LUCKNOW, April 26 -- Women, ex-servicemen and people claiming to be members of Parvatiya Samaj took to the streets here on Saturday, demanding strict action over the alleged vandalism at mayor Sushma Kharkwal's residence on April 22.
A large number of protesters gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi statue near GPO and staged a peaceful demonstration. The protest was held days after a video clip showed individuals allegedly defacing the mayor's nameplate and raising objectionable slogans.
The protesters marched from GPO and were on their way to the district magistrate's residence to submit a memorandum but police stopped the rally near the DRM office, citing security concerns and set up barricades.
The ACP (Hazratganj) reached the spot and accepted the memorandum on behalf of the district magistrate.
Protesters demanded an impartial inquiry and strict legal action against those involved. They also urged authorities to ensure the dignity of elected representatives and prevent such incidents in the future....
