Lucknow, June 27 -- People from the Muslim community gathered in large numbers in the city's bylanes to mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions on Ashura - the tenth of Muharram-on Friday. Wearing black clothes and with tears in their eyes they walked barefoot for several kilometres. Some also walked barefoot on broken tubelights at certain stretches of their journey. Carrying tazias and alams, the mourners recited nauha, marsiya and soz (elegies). The largest procession moved from Nazim Sahab ka Imambara to Karbala Talkatora. Seenazani (beating their chests in lament), chhuriyon ka matam and Qama ka matam (mourning with knives and daggers respectively) were also performed on the streets. Mohammad Aslam (28) felt a sense of nostalgia about being accompanied by his grandfather to the procession. "My grandfather used to tell me about the supreme sacrifice made by Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions. Even talking about the sacrifices brings tears to my eyes," said Aslam. Shifa Siddiqui (30) accompanied her 5-year-old daughter to help her understand the significance of Muharram.
