Rudrapur, April 4 -- Education authorities in Bageshwar district have ordered a probe after a small "ghost shrine" was constructed on the premises of Government Inter College (GIC) in Kausani following fear among students, particularly girls, over rumours of a spirit haunting the campus. Vinay Kumar Arya, chief education officer (CEO), Bageshwar, said on Friday that the matter came to the notice of the education department after reports of the shrine being built inside the school premises surfaced. "To construct a shrine in the premises of a government college in the name of a ghost amounts to promoting superstition.
According to members of the parents-teachers' association (PTA), the small makeshift shrine was constructed recently using bricks under a tree inside the campus, where a Nepalese worker had allegedly died by suicide around 30 years ago. Chandan Singh Bhandari, president of the PTA of GIC Kausani, said rumours had persisted in the area that the worker's spirit haunted the campus, which created fear among students and villagers.
He said the PTA decided to construct a small symbolic shrine. However, controversy arose after allegations surfaced that Rs.100 each had been collected from students for its construction....
