PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 30 -- The health department has intensified surveillance and preparedness measures after the district reported its first confirmed case of swine flu (H1N1) this season, officials said on Saturday. A 50-year-old woman from Sarai Inayat, who had been suffering from cold and flu-like symptoms for the past week, was initially taken to a private hospital by her family. During a medical examination, she tested positive for the H1N1 virus and was subsequently referred to SRN Hospital for specialised care, officials said. The patient was admitted to the hospital's isolation ward on Friday night. Doctors said her condition remains critical and that she has been placed on BiPAP support. Dr Sujit Verma, nodal officer for swine flu, said the woman is also suffering from pneumonia, which has complicated her condition. Dr Neelam Singh, chief medical superintendent, SRN Hospital, said the hospital is fully equipped to handle swine flu cases, with adequate testing facilities and sufficient stocks of essential medicines. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak chaired a video conference on swine flu preparedness with district medical officers and medical college officials. Dr Singh said test results and patient status would be submitted to CMOs, while Beli, Colvin, CHC and PHC doctors were told to remain vigilant....
