Prayagraj-based pharma dealer arrested in codeine syrup case
VARANASI, Jan. 5 -- One person was arrested from Prayagraj in connection with a codeine cough syrup case registered in Varanasi, police said.
Station house officer of Sarnath, Pankaj Tripathi, said the accused, Suresh Chandra Gupta, 55, a resident of 131 LIG, Pritam Nagar, under Dhummanganj police station limits in Prayagraj district, was arrested on Sunday.
According to police, on December 18, drug inspector Junab Ali filed a complaint at the Sarnath police station alleging that a licence to sell medicines was being misused by selling codeine-containing cough syrups in the open market for intoxication, without medical consultation and without completing mandatory legal formalities.
The complaint further stated that the licence holder had allegedly used forged sale and purchase invoices and wilfully disobeyed instructions issued by a public servant to appear during the investigation.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 318(2), 318(4), 338, 336(3), 340(2), 208 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 26(d) of the NDPS Act at Sarnath police station.
Police said the investigation is being conducted by sub-inspector Durgesh Singh.
