Prayagraj: Rescue bid in Ganga leaves two missing
PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 20 -- A man and a woman went missing in the Ganga at Kuresar Ganga Ghat in Prayagraj's trans-Ganga region on Monday morning after a woman and her husband got into difficulty while bathing in the river and a man rushed to rescue them. The husband was rescued, but the woman and her rescuer were swept away by the strong current, police said.
The missing persons were identified as Suresh Kesarwani, a resident of Jagdishpur Chandan, and Anita Yadav, wife of Raju Yadav of Ghatampur. A search operation was launched to trace them, officials said. Kesarwani served as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) khand sharirik pramukh in Kaudihar, Prayagraj.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place around 9 am when Raju and Anita were bathing in the river and suddenly found themselves in deep water. Suresh and some other people bathing nearby rushed to rescue them.
During the rescue attempt, Suresh also got caught in deep water. Anita, reportedly believing that her husband was still struggling to stay afloat, moved further into the river to save him but was swept away by the strong current. Both Anita and Suresh subsequently went missing, while Raju was rescued, police said.
Nawabganj station house officer (SHO) Pankaj Awasthi said a police team reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and launched a search operation with the help of divers. They were yet to be found, he added.
Meanwhile, local residents alleged that divers arrived nearly three hours after the incident, triggering anger among people gathered at the ghat. Family members of the missing persons also reached the spot.
Residents demanded round-the-clock deployment of water police personnel and trained divers at Kuresar Ganga Ghat, citing the risk of accidents during bathing and the need for an immediate response to emergencies.
The search for Suresh Kesarwani and Anita Yadav continued till late evening....
