PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 2 -- A massive fire broke out at a furniture showroom in Naini Market on Thursday evening, destroying furniture and other goods estimated to be worth around Rs 10 lakh. No casualties were reported. The fire broke out at Tiwari Traders, a large furniture showroom owned by BJP leader Rajesh Tiwari, a resident of Naini Market. Naini police and two fire tenders rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. According to Tiwari, the preliminary loss estimate is around Rs 10 lakh, though a detailed assessment is underway. A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire, but the exact cause has yet to be established. The death of a third-year engineering student following an illness triggered protests by hundreds of students at an engineering college in Prayagraj on Thursday, prompting the college authorities to suspend classes and accept several demands raised by the protesters. The woman student, a native of Kanpur and a third-year student, had reportedly been suffering from fever for some time and died while undergoing treatment a few days ago. Following talks with protesters, the head of the department of computer science and engineering was also removed from the post. The traffic police conducted a vehicle-checking drive at different locations of the city, on Thursday night. During the operation, 50 vehicles were issued challans for violating traffic norms.
