PRAYAGRAJ, July 22 -- A surprise anti-power theft drive in Naini's Chakdaudi and Prayagpuram localities on Tuesday uncovered electricity theft at 10 houses, including the residence of a serving sub-inspector, prompting the power department to lodge FIRs against all the accused under the Electricity Act. Executive engineer (Naini) Nilesh Mishra said the raid was launched following complaints of rampant power theft in the area. During inspections in Chakdaudi, officials found four consumers illegally bypassing electricity meters despite having valid power connections. Some of these households were also found operating high-load appliances, including air conditioners, through the unauthorised supply. In six other houses, residents were found illegally drawing electricity directly from overhead power lines using hook connections (katiya). Among those booked was a serving sub-inspector whose three-storey house in Naini was allegedly found drawing electricity through an illegal hook connection despite having a sanctioned power connection. Officials said the officer is currently posted outside Prayagraj, while his family lives in the house.
