Power staff intensify stir, say officials creating hostile environment
Lucknow, April 26 -- Power sector employees across UP have stepped up their agitation against the proposed privatisation of thermal power plants, holding massive demonstrations in Aligarh and Harduaganj on Saturday. The protests were organised under the banner of Vidyut Karmachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti.
"Hundreds of engineers, technicians, and staff participated in the demonstrations, while similar protest meetings continued in other districts, reflecting widespread anger among employees over privatisation and alleged harassment," Sangharsh Samiti convenor Shailendra Dubey claimed.
Employee leaders warned that if the decision to privatise operation and maintenance of Panki and Jawaharpur thermal power plants was not withdrawn immediately, and actions against protesting employees were not stopped, the agitation would be intensified across the state. They held the power corporation management responsible for any escalation.
The committee alleged that top officials are systematically pushing privatisation while creating a hostile work environment for employees, jeopardising industrial harmony and the state's power supply.
Dubey said an emergency core committee meeting had been convened on April 26 to decide the next course of action.
