Power load increase 'without consent' leaves scores of city consumers fuming
LUCKNOW, July 6 -- A number of Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (LESA) consumers are worried after discovering that their sanctioned electricity load has been increased without prior notice or their consent.
The office-bearers of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Upbhokta Parishad claimed that in the Amausi zone alone, 1,63,343 consumers faced the surprise of increased power load, followed by Jankipuram (85,448 consumers), Gomti Nagar (73,831) and Lucknow Central (64,682).
According to LESA records, the electricity load of 3,87,304 consumers was revised under the revenue management system (RMS). The Upbhokta Parishad has said if the load increase is not taken back, it would be challenged in the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) and the court.
Following SMS alerts about the revised load on Saturday, several consumers reached electricity offices in Amausi, Lucknow Central, Jankipuram and Gomti Nagar on Sunday, alleging that it had been done without their consent. Anand Pandey from Para claimed that despite having a 3-kW connection, his actual electricity consumption never exceeded 2 kW. Another consumer Rakesh Dhanuk from Balaganj questioned the reliability of smart meters, saying it was unfair to revise sanctioned loads solely on the basis of smart meter data.
Officials say they have accepted around 500 applications for load verification. Power department officials said consumers who object to the increased load can submit applications to the executive engineer (collection). If a subsequent meter inspection finds that the actual connected load is lower, the sanctioned load will be reduced accordingly.
Mukesh Tyagi, superintending engineer (commercial), Lucknow central zone, said domestic consumers are required to pay Rs.110 per kW up to 4 kW, while commercial consumers are charged Rs.330 per kW up to the same limit. For sanctioned loads exceeding 4 kW, a fixed monthly charge of Rs.450 per kW is applicable.
Sushil Garg, chief engineer, Gomti Nagar zone, said the load revision was carried out only for consumers who had exceeded their sanctioned load continuously for three months or on three separate occasions during the 2025-26 financial year....
