Bahraich, Aug. 9 -- Five alleged members of a power cable theft gang were arrested after a police encounter on the Saryu Canal embankment near Hada Basehri in Nanpara on Saturday. One of the accused, Kadir, son of Shafiq and a resident of Siddbahi under Mati police station in Barabanki district, suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg during the exchange of fire. Police said he is wanted in several criminal cases, and was admitted to the district hospital.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Nanpara police and the Crime Branch's Special Operations Group (SOG) on the directions of Bahraich SP Vishwajeet Srivastava. Police had formed special teams after power cables were cut and stolen in the Nanpara area on Friday night. A case was registered against unidentified persons at Nanpara police station. SP Vishwajeet Srivastava said police surrounded the gang near the Saryu Canal embankment at Hada Basehri after a tip-off. During the encounter, Kadir was shot in leg and arrested with Krishna Kumar, Kuldeep Gupta, Harendra Gupta and Udayraj Chauhan of Sitapur. One suspect escaped. Police recovered a pistol, cartridges, a Maruti Eeco, stolen power cables and tools. The police are questioning the accused to find out their involvement in other power cable theft cases and identify other members of the gang....
