PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 30 -- An agitation by candidates seeking an opportunity in the recruitment process for trained graduate teachers (TGT) and postgraduate teachers (PGT) in government-aided secondary schools under the old recruitment rules ended abruptly on Thursday, the fourth day of the protest, after police detained around a dozen protesters and cleared the education directorate premises. After 7 pm, police detained around 12 candidates, including one of the leaders Ashutosh Pandey, and sent them to the Civil Lines police station. Heavy police deployment remained around the directorate premises till late at night. The day began with the administration locking the main gate of the state education directorate while some protesters had stepped out to arrange food, water and other essentials for their colleagues. On their return, the aspirants were stopped from entering the premises, although some men and women protesters were still inside. Administrative officials told the protesters that they could stage their agitation at any place of their choice but would not be allowed to hold a sit-in inside the directorate. The candidates remained at the main gate amid drizzle until around 2 pm before marching towards Eklavya crossing, wearing saffron religious scarves around their heads. They then blocked traffic at the crossing, draping the scarves around themselves like shrouds. Police and administrative officials cited prohibitory orders under Section 163 and asked them to end the protest, warning of strict action if they refused. However, the aspirants remained adamant. The protesters said they were willing to clear the road but wanted permission to return to the directorate and resume their sit-in so that their demands could be conveyed to the concerned officials. The deadlock continued till around 6.45 pm, when the protesters returned to the directorate premises and resumed their sit-in. Around 7.30 pm, additional police commissioner Ajay Pal Sharma arrived with personnel from several police stations and four Vajra vehicles. Police detained Pandey and around 11 other candidates and removed the remaining protesters from the premises, bringing the four-day agitation to an end....
