GORAKHPUR, Aug. 1 -- An undertrial prisoner facing charges under a Pocso case, escaped from the Gorakhpur District Jail on Friday, triggering a frantic search operation across the district. While the police launched an intensive search at railway and bus stations, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were also placed on alert. Prison authorities have also initiated an inquiry into the security lapse. Circle officer (CO) Ravi Kumar Singh said the accused, identified as Vipin Kumar, a resident of Sarsonpar village, under the limits of Bansgaon Police Station, had been arrested on July 18 in connection with a rape case. During the investigation, relevant sections of the Pocso Act were also added against him. According to officials, Vipin Kumar was among 50 prisoners assigned to clean the jail's mango orchard on Friday morning. After nearly two hours, all the prisoners were escorted back to their barracks. During a routine headcount, jail authorities discovered that Vipin Kumar was missing and immediately informed the local police.
