PRAYAGRAJ, May 12 -- The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun working on a comprehensive plan to tackle the recurring problem of waterlogging in the city following a recent directive from the state government to all urban local bodies. Chief engineer of PMC, Dinesh Chandra Sachan, has asked officials to submit ward-wise details of areas that face severe waterlogging during the monsoon. During a meeting held recently, officials discussed the need for constructing new drains as well as making temporary arrangements to ensure smooth discharge of rainwater during heavy showers. Sachan said the state government has instructed municipal bodies to submit detailed proposals outlining preventive measures against monsoon-related waterlogging. He said PMC would send its proposal within the stipulated 15-day period, after which funds are expected to be allocated. According to him, more than a dozen localities in Prayagraj require urgent attention, including the construction of new drains and underground pipelines for rainwater outlets. Some of these localities requiring urgent attention include Mumfordganj, Baihrana, Rani Mandi, Johnstonganj, Himmatganj, Chowk, etc. Special proposals will be prepared for areas that face acute waterlogging every year. Based on these proposals, funds will be sanctioned by the government. Officials said the budget for these works is likely to be released within the current financial year. Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Sai Teja chaired a review meeting on Monday to discuss preparations for preventing waterlogging and to plan large-scale drain-cleaning drives ahead of the monsoon....
