PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 7 -- The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation on Tuesday morning demolished over a dozen kiosks and seized 39 others during an anti-encroachment drive opposite Yatrik Hotel on Sardar Patel Marg in Civil Lines. The team reached the spot around 5am and began removing the kiosks. Led by additional municipal commissioner Arvind Rai, the drive lasted about an hour and the premises were cleared by 6am. According to eyewitnesses, a lawyer reached the spot and objected to the removal of the kiosks, but the enforcement team continued the drive. Several demolished kiosks, some containing food items, were left at the site after the action. The action followed a recent inspection of the premises by district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma along with municipal commissioner Sai Teja and PDA vice-chairman Rishiraj. The officials had directed that the premises be cleared. Shopkeepers had subsequently been given an ultimatum to remove temporary kiosks and carts. While most vendors had removed their belongings, some kiosks and carts remained at the site and were selling food items, officials said. The encroachments were also contributing to traffic congestion on the road. A kiosk selling liquor and beer had also been removed from the premises before Tuesday's municipal action. The cleared area is now expected to be used for parking....
