Peace restored after nurses, docs face off over alleged assault
GORAKHPUR, March 1 -- District authorities stepped in late Saturday evening to restore peace at Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, Gorakhpur, announcing a three-member probe committee to investigate the dispute. A tense face-off between junior doctors and nursing staff had erupted over the alleged assault on nurses by an MBBS intern at the trauma centre.
The confrontation, which lasted nearly three hours, stemmed from the alleged incident on Wednesday, after which nurses launched a sit-in protest near the principal's office, demanding strict action against the intern and his colleagues. Junior resident doctors gathered in opposition, triggering heated exchanges between the two groups.
Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel were deployed on campus to prevent any untoward incident. Authorities separated both groups and held talks to ease the tension.
