Patient's kin borrowed Rs.8 lakh for air ambulance that crashed in Jharkhand
Ranchi, Feb. 26 -- When he opened his small hotel in Jharkhand's Satbarwa hamlet in Latehar district after years of painstaking effort, Sanjay Kumar Sahu, 41, must have felt that his luck was about to turn for the better.
That was not to be.
A short-circuit fire ripped through the hotel on February 16, leaving Sahu with 63% burn injuries as he desperately tried to save essential materials and equipment from the flames.
He was initially rushed to Dev Kamal Hospital in Ranchi but as his condition continued to deteriorate, his family grew desperate to provide him with the best possible care, eventually deciding to shift him to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi.
To provide for an air ambulance, the family even pooled in all their savings to collect Rs.8 lakh, Sahu's brother Vijay Kumar Sahu said.
"Our family gathered Rs.8 lakh to take him to Delhi. Most of the amount was borrowed," said Vijay Sahu.
The race against time to save his life ended minutes after the Beechcraft King Air C90 air ambulance carrying him crashed in the forests of Chatra on Monday evening.
The crash killed Kumar, his wife, Archana Devi, relative Dhuru Kumar, physician Vikas Kumar Gupta, paramedic Sachin Kumar Mishra, and pilots Vivek Vikas Bhagat and Savrajdeep Singh.
The aircraft, operated by Redbird Airways, took off from Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi at 7.11pm, according to a statement by aviation regulator DGCA.
After establishing contact with Kolkata, at 7.34pm, the aircraft, with the tail number VT-AJV, lost communication and radar contact with Kolkata at approximately 100 NM South-East of Varanasi, and shortly after that, the plane went down in the forest near Simaria.
Sahu is survived by his two sons, Subham Kumar, who is currently appearing for his CBSE Class X examinations, and Shivam Kumar, a Class V student.
"I had never thought such a fate would befall my brother. He was fighting to save his work, and we were fighting to save his life...," said his elder brother, Vijay Kumar Sahu.
Scenes of heartbreak unfolded as inconsolable relatives gathered for the last rites after post-mortem examinations at Sadar Hospital in Chatra.
Dhuru had boarded the flight to help his aunt, Archana Devi.
"I had sent him to help save a life, but the sky took everything from us. My son was a pillar of strength for this family," his father Dinesh Kumar said.
Bajrangi Prasad, the father of Gupta who was assigned to keep Sahu stable during the flight, recounted the sacrifices he made for his son's education.
"He has a seven-year-old son... I sold my farmland to educate him," Prasad said.
"He told me he was going to Delhi with a patient, but soon I learned the aircraft had crashed and my son is no more."
The residents of nearby villages were the first to reach the crash site.
Rescuers retrieved the bodies overnight and brought them to the Chatra Sadar Hospital.
Redbird Airways received its permit to serve non-scheduled flights in 2019, according to its website.
According to the DGCA website, the fleet had six planes, including the one that crashed....
